M&S recalls M&S Food Truffle Gouda due to the presence of Listeria Monocytogenes

Why it was recalled

M&S is recalling its Food Truffle Gouda cheese after Listeria monocytogenes was found in the product. Listeria is a bacterium that can cause an illness called listeriosis, which usually feels like flu, with high temperature, aches, chills, sickness or diarrhoea.

Most healthy people recover without trouble, but listeria is taken seriously because it can cause severe complications, including meningitis, in vulnerable groups: people over 65, pregnant women and their unborn babies, newborns, and anyone with a weakened immune system.

What this means for you

Check your fridge for this cheese, and if you have it, do not eat it, however normal it looks or smells; listeria gives no sensory warning. Return it to M&S for a full refund. Be especially careful if your household includes anyone pregnant, elderly or immunocompromised, and seek medical advice if such a person has eaten the cheese and feels unwell.
