Why it was recalled
O'Brien Fine Foods is recalling a range of its ham products because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Ready-to-eat cooked meats are among the foods where listeria poses the most risk, because they are eaten cold, straight from the pack, with no cooking step to kill bacteria.
Listeriosis usually resembles flu, with fever, aches, chills, sickness or diarrhoea, and most healthy people recover fully. The concern is for vulnerable groups: over-65s, pregnant women and their unborn babies, very young babies, and people with weakened immune systems, where infection can become severe.
