McCormack Family Farms recalls Spinach and Mixed Leaves products because of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes
Why it was recalled
McCormack Family Farms is recalling its Spinach and Mixed Leaves products after Listeria monocytogenes was found in them. Salad leaves are eaten raw by design, so there is no cooking step between contamination and the plate.
Listeriosis usually causes flu-like symptoms, from fever and aches to sickness and diarrhoea, and most healthy people recover fully. For over-65s, pregnant women and their unborn babies, newborns and people with weakened immune systems, it can escalate to serious complications including meningitis. This recall was later extended twice, so the affected list grew.
